Buildings, are at the center of our lives and their ability to affect our mood, our health and our plans for the future has well been exploited as a business. As one of the oldest industries, if we compare it to the new industries such as information technology, architecture has its own spirit.
Like medicine, architects are thought to think about the future and to be creative and to tackle climate change. While some architects create measures and good practice frameworks for sustainability, the industry as a whole is moving slow, because the core of it’s development is self-interest.
Protectionism played a huge role in architecture and the development of it, mainly started by an aristocrat which wanted to protect their land and their people and with the power earned developed properties. Than, states learned to develop policies such as mercantilism which later become known as protectionism, which imposed a character on how buildings should look and function.
Conservative measures such as protectionism worked across all supply chains. Mainly, the supply chain of architecture, dealt with raw resources, which had to be extracted local, to be affordable to be built. After the 2nd world war, the supply chain of architectural goods diversified and as the offer, but the ask was still in protection measures such as imports in some cases. Free trade has opened trade barriers but it did not fix the problem.
Buyers, in the architectural space, are mainly regulated by banks and buildings (large scale projects and small projects) are developed with the help of banks. Without banks, the world would be an ugly place to live. This beauty, comes at a cost. As we all know, we cannot make cheap and good, but architecture today is expensive and in exchange, poor quality.
In fact, British Design Council published a report saying that almost 9 in 10 designs are over budget due to many factors such as knowledge, affordability, stock, location and preference.
That’s not a designer’s fault, when we, as individuals we face so many choices, even making our own mind sometimes proves to be difficult.
Lag. This our first thought. We use software to plan advanced buildings and when we execute them we bump into this architectural supply chain which is lagging behind because it’s too complex and of course, to many self-interests in the middle. Regulation is good, but it doesn’t work all the time.
Now, as you understand a little better this space, probably you agree already that it needs to be improved. Our mission is to deliver autonomous homes which build, maintain and recycle. We love to fell like home, everywhere we go, so we thought that our homes should follow us where we go.
This is how HOMEPOD was born. A home which grows when you do and follows you wherever you go. To build it, just click. The system will try to understand you mitigate your risks, providing you with comfort.
